About this item

Winner of the 2022 Good Food Awards , our cacao powder is organically grown by Harish Manoj Kumar and Karthikeyan Palaniswamy on their family farm at the base of the Western Ghats. It's a minimally processed (not Dutch processed), non-alkalized cacao powder meaning that it's rich in all its naturally occurring nutrients and antioxidants. That super lush chocolatey mouthfeel? Hella cocoa butter, baby! Made from Anamalai Estate’s award winning cacao beans, this is a beautiful showcase of the potential of Indian cacao. The fact that these beans are grown on a single estate means that you’re tasting a true expression of terroir i.e. the soil they were planted in, and the seasons they grew through. The cacao is intercropped with nutmeg and coconut palms, on land that was originally a eucalyptus grove, then a guava orchard, and now a diverse ecosystem where desi cows roam by day, and elephants scratch their backs on the coconut palms by night! No added sugar. 100% raw cacao powder.

Flavor is strong

The rich, complex terroir flavor is definitely present, but it's much stronger than I expected. For my usual recipes, it overpowered other ingredients, so I had to adjust ratios quite a bit. It’s good quality, just a bit intense for casual use without modification.

Elevates everything

Using this Anamalai cacao has really elevated my dessert game. The flavor profile is so distinct, a lush chocolatey taste that's far from the flat bitterness of regular powders. It dissolves beautifully, creating a wonderfully smooth texture whether in a smoothie or a baked good. Even a simple chocolate mousse tastes gourmet with this. Would recommend for anyone serious about baking.

Unbelievably good in baking

Jocelyn Y. · 2026-10-05 · Verified purchase

This cacao powder brings such a deep, rich chocolate flavor to my brownies and cakes. It's noticeably more complex than other brands I've tried; not just sweet, but genuinely chocolatey. You can really taste the difference from a single estate origin.

Good, but not for everyday

Will A. · 2026-03-12 · Verified purchase

This cacao has a truly amazing depth of flavor, much better than anything I've bought at a standard grocery store. The natural richness really comes through, especially in homemade chocolates. My only minor critique is that it's a bit too bold for my morning oatmeal, making it more of a special occasion ingredient than an everyday staple for me. It's fantastic for serious baking projects, though.
