About this item

Warm and buttery with a hint of fresh green cane flavor, our panela cane sugar is produced using traditional methods and materials in the lush mountains of Colombia. Use instead of white or brown sugar in baking, sprinkle over fresh fruit or mix with hot water to make the traditional beverage agua panela. The heirloom cane is cut by hand and carried to the estate's own trapiche, where the cane is pressed into juice and cooked into sugar. The juice is boiled in a series of pots, which are heated by burning the leftover cane fiber after the juice is pressed out. The boiling process requires constant attention by skilled artisans, up to the final step where the reduced sugar syrup is tossed through a window, one bowl at a time, and then whipped using a long-handled paddle to create a light, fluffy, granulated sugar texture. Not what I expected

Colin V. · 2025-09-25 · Verified purchase

Was hoping for something truly distinctive, but this sugar just tastes like slightly more complex brown sugar to me. The fresh green cane flavor isn't as pronounced as the description suggested. It's fine, but doesn't quite justify the specialty label for my palate.

Great flavor, slightly coarse

Ryan P. · 2026-01-27 · Verified purchase

This sugar certainly delivers on the described flavor profile; it's got a lovely warmth and a subtle hint of green cane that's really pleasant. I mainly use it for my morning coffee, and it adds a nice depth that regular sugar just can't match. My only minor critique is that the granulation is a little coarser than I anticipated, which means it takes a touch longer to dissolve fully compared to a finer brown sugar. Still, the unique taste makes up for that small inconvenience.

A gourmet staple

I've been looking for a quality panela sugar for ages, and this one is absolutely perfect. The 21 oz container is a great value and lasts a while. It brings such a unique, rich sweetness to my oatmeal and is incredible in my homemade chai. I also tried it in a batch of snickerdoodles, and the flavor was unbelievably good, far better than with regular brown sugar. It really elevates everyday foods into something special.

Flavor is good, but hard to measure

Nadia T. · 2026-02-26

The taste of this panela is really nice, very warm and complex. However, the granules are quite inconsistent in size, making it a bit difficult to get precise measurements for baking recipes. I find myself having to pack it down more than expected.

Rich and versatile

This panela sugar has a wonderfully complex flavor, much more interesting than plain brown sugar. It works beautifully in baking, adding a deeper caramel note to cookies and cakes. I also love sprinkling it over grapefruit for a unique breakfast treat.
